An end to the NBA lockout has its plusses and minuses for NBA rookies.

On the one hand, they can officially sign with the team that drafted them – and get paid.

On the other, rookie life subjects first-year players to many less-than-glamorous tasks.

Jimmer Fredette is finally a rookie on the Sacramento Kings. And if you thought Fredette’s God-like status in Provo precluded him from rookie hazing, you were sadly mistaken.

But if Fredette’s ability to throw a plastic water bottle into a trashcan is any indication of his shooting accuracy, Kings fans should be sufficiently excited for Jimmer-time.

VW returning to Super Bowl

Volkswagen of America will advertise during the Super Bowl for the third consecutive year, premiering a 60-second spot at the beginning of the third quarter.

The spot will feature the all-new Beetle, which arrived in dealerships in September. The 2012 Beetle was teased as a silhouette in last year's advertisement, but the iconic redesign is now ready for its Super Bowl close-up.

"The Super Bowl is the perfect platform to feature the bold, dynamic, and sportiest Beetle ever made," said Tim Mahoney, chief product and marketing officer of Volkswagen of America.

VW's spots in last year's Super Bowl were "The Force" and "Black Beetle." "The Force" featured the 2012 Chattanooga-made Passat and mini-Darth Vader.

A closer look at the New Orleans Saints' NFC South game against the Atlanta Falcons tonight at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m.

FALCONS (9-5) at SAINTS (11-3)

Coaches: Sean Payton (60-34 in six seasons, all with Saints); Mike Smith (42-20 in four seasons, all with Falcons).

TV: ESPN, WDSU.

Radio: 870-AM, 105.3-FM, 830-AM (Spanish broadcast).

KEEP AN EYE ON ...

THE RED-HOT QUARTERBACKS

As you might have read, Saints quarterback Drew Brees is 305 yards shy of breaking Dan Marino's single-season passing record of 5,084 yards heading into tonight's game.

But more important for this specific matchup, Brees is locked in. He's playing as well as he ever has in his career, and that's saying a lot.

Over the past five games, Brees has passed for 1,776 yards with 16 touchdowns and zero interceptions. He has thrown for at least 322 yards in each of those five games. As usual, he'll be the best player on the field tonight, which trumps every other matchup between these heated rivals.

On the flip side, Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan also has shined. Over the past two games, Ryan has thrown for 544 yards with seven touchdowns and zero interceptions. Over the past five games, he has thrown for 12 touchdowns with just two interceptions, while leading Atlanta to four wins.

ESPN.com moved Ryan up to fifth place on its MVP Watch this week as he quietly has continued his steady growth in his fourth NFL season. Ryan is on pace to throw for more than 4,000 yards and 30 touchdowns this season. And he's tied with Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco with 42 career wins -- most by a quarterback in his first four seasons in the Super Bowl era.

"He's definitely a guy that we feel is a great player," New Orleans Coach Sean Payton said of Ryan. "He has that size that you look for. He's very intelligent, and they ask him to do a lot at the line of scrimmage. He has a quick release, he's hard to sack, and he has that athleticism where he can make plays moving to his right or his left.

"And I think he's provided that leadership to put that program in a position it hasn't been in a while, much like Drew has done for us."

THE KICKERS

This game likely will come down to a kick by the Saints' John Kasay or the Falcons' Matt Bryant -- or both of them.

The last four games in this series were decided by three points, including the Saints' 26-23 overtime victory on Nov. 13 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

In that game, Kasay made four of five field-goal attempts, including the winning 26-yarder in overtime. That came after Bryant's 27-yarder forced overtime as time expired in the fourth quarter.

The Saints lost a critical Week 3 matchup to Atlanta at the Superdome last season when Garrett Hartley missed a 29-yard field goal in overtime.

Kasay and Bryant should be up to the task tonight because the veterans have had impressive seasons. Kasay has made 26 of 32 field-goal attempts in his first season with the Saints. He had made seven in a row before missing a 50-yarder late last week at Minnesota.

Bryant has been even better, making 23 of 25 field-goal attempts.

KEY MATCHUP

SAINTS LT JERMON BUSHROD VS. FALCONS DE JOHN ABRAHAM

Saints left tackle Jermon Bushrod has had another quietly impressive season.

He has allowed only three sacks, including a shutout last week against the NFL's sack leader, Vikings defensive end Jared Allen. The Saints also held the Falcons without a sack in their Week 10 matchup.

Atlanta veteran John Abraham, however, has played his best football the past month after recovering from a nagging groin injury he suffered in Week 2. Abraham, 6 feet 3, 263 pounds, was chosen NFC Defensive Player of the Week last week after tormenting the Jacksonville Jaguars with 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Abraham now has 8.5 sacks this season.

"He's been a consistent pain in the rear for a long time," Payton said of Abraham, a 12-year veteran who has 111 sacks in his career. "When you watch his recent games, he's a guy that can really change the outcome of your offensive production. ... You're not converting the third downs you normally convert because it's someone who has that speed and power. He's playing very well."

The Falcons' other defensive end, veteran Ray Edwards, also has played better lately after recovering from a summer knee injury. He has 1.5 sacks over the past two games.

Atlanta would love to generate a pass rush with just its four-man line, so the Falcons can drop everyone else back in coverage -- but that didn't work for them in the previous meeting.

GAME PLAN

This game is exactly why the Falcons paid so much to trade up and draft receiver Julio Jones in April.

The dynamic rookie has made Atlanta much harder to defend, giving it twin big-play threats in Jones and receiver Roddy White.

"You look in the long run, they wanted to have more explosive plays this year, and they've got 'em, New Orleans defensive coordinator Gregg Williams said. "They've had 'em, and it's a big part of the game. It's going to be a battle of big plays. Can Drew or Matt Ryan, who can create the most big plays? And we obviously had to change our approach to how we play them this year because of him being here. He's a very good, young talent."

The Falcons also have one of the league's best power-running games, led by tailback Michael Turner. They also have one of the NFL's most reliable possession receivers in tight end Tony Gonzalez.

To add even another dimension, Atlanta has increased its use of the no-huddle offense to limit defenses' substituting.

The Saints didn't have to worry much about Jones last time since he left early with a hamstring injury -- but he's back in peak form. The past two games, he caught eight passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns.

New Orleans simply can't roll its coverage to one receiver or the other to prevent a big play -- something that has been an issue for the Saints.

As potent as the Falcons' passing game has become, linebacker Jonathan Vilma said the first priority with Atlanta is always stopping the run. Turner began the week ranked third in the NFL with 1,129 rushing yards.

BY THE NUMBERS

Atlanta leads the all-time series 45-39, but the Saints are gaining fast. The Saints are 9-2 since Payton arrived in the Crescent City in 2006.
The Saints have won six consecutive "Monday Night Football" games, the longest active streak in the NFL, according to ESPN.com. They've beaten Atlanta four times in a row on Monday night, dating to the 2006 season.
New Orleans tight end Jimmy Graham is on pace to break a yardage record that's even older than Marino's passing record. He needs 120 yards to break the all-time mark by a tight end, 1,290 yards, which was set by Kellen Winslow in 1980.
New Orleans tailback Darren Sproles and Falcons tailback Jacquizz Rodgers are tied as two of the shortest players in the NFL at 5-6.

For 125 years, First United Church Mission has had many ways of being an active part of the neighbourhood of the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, working to both serve and serve with the community. Relationships have been built. Ideas have been tried. Vision and possibility have been offered through a variety of voices.

Vancouver-Burrard Presbytery and the ministry staff at First United Church Mission have come to recognize that we hold very different understandings of how “Gospel Community” is best lived out. With changes in funding available to First United Church Mission for the work of sheltering people who are in need – something that First United Church Mission understands is a vital component to its ministry of refuge and building inclusive community; and with Vancouver-Burrard Presbytery’s desire for the safety and security of all people who live and work at First United Church Mission by ensuring compliance with civic authorities, many changes are taking place.

Recognizing that the direction of the ministry as intended by the Presbytery is quite different than what they have envisioned, and hoping for new possibilities of building an inclusive intentional community with those who are the most marginalized in our society, the Rev. Ric Matthews, Executive Minister; the Rev. Sandra Severs, Deputy Executive Minister; and Gillian Rhodes, Director of Operations; initiated conversation about a separating of the ways. Vancouver-Burrard Presbytery on Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011 agreed to this as a constructive way forward that would best serve the interests and visions of all concerned. Both parties recognize the validity and worth of the emphases of the other and look forward to nurturing supportive and healthy relationships. It is the Presbytery’s hope and prayer that Ric, Sandra and Gillian will be able to find ways of living out the reality they believe needs to come into being in the world.

The ministry of First United Church Mission will also continue, in the midst of these changes. With the support of BC Housing, the provision of shelter will continue through to March 31, 2012. The work of advocacy and the work of serving the Downtown Eastside community will continue.

Vancouver-Burrard Presbytery will be working with the Board, the staff, the community at First United Church Mission, and the community in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver as the ministry of First United Church Mission transitions into its next stage of life.

Mayweather makes plea deal: report

Undefeated US boxing star Floyd Mayweather will plead guilty to reduced charges on Wednesday in a deal to end two pending criminal cases, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported on Tuesday.

Mayweather faced up to 34 years in prison over a domestic violence incident and another charge of battery on a security guard in a dispute involving traffic tickets, but might serve only as little as two days behind bars.

Clark County district attorney David Roger told the newspaper that Mayweather will enter guilty pleas in Las Vegas Justice Court on one count of battery domestic violence and two counts of harassment, all misdemeanors.

Prosecutors retained the right to argue for sentencing under the deal and Mayweather could face $3,000 in fines and a minimum of two days in jail up to a maximum to 18 months behind bars.

Mayweather, 34, was set to have a preliminary hearing on Wednesday on felony charges that included coercion, grand larceny and robbery from a 2010 incident involving ex-girlfriend Josie Harris and their three children.

Mayweather, free on $31,000 bail from that incident, was accused of assaulting her after she told him she was dating another man, police said, and he reacted by striking Harris, threatening his children and taking their cell phones.

The misdemeanor battery charge Mayweather will face stems from striking Harris while the harassment charges come from the threats to his children.

Next week, Mayweather will plead no contest to a misdemeanor battery charge and pay a $1,000 fine for poking a security guard in November of last year over parking violations near his mansion in a gated community.

Mayweather, 42-0 with 26 knockouts, stopped fellow American Victor Ortiz in the fourth round last September to win the World Boxing Council welterweight title. He plans to fight again on May 5 in Las Vegas against an undecided foe.

Boxing fans have longed to see Mayweather test himself against the fighter many fans consider to have replaced him as the world pound-for-pound champion, Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao.

The Vatican announced Tuesday that Blessed Pedro Calungsod of Cebu will be canonized as a saint for the Roman Catholic Church.

Once canonized, he will be the second Filipino Catholic saint following Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, who was elevated to sainthood in 1987.

According to Vatican’s news site, Pope Benedict XVI has officially approved the promulgation of decrees for canonization of Calungsod and six others who have been said to have performed miracles. No definite date, however, has been set for the canonization rites.

The authorized miracle of Blessed Pedro Calungsod reportedly happened in 2003 at a Cebu hospital when a woman who was clinically pronounced dead for two hours was allegedly brought back to life through the intercession of Calungsod.

A young martyr

Calungsod, together with companion Blessed Diego San Vitores, was killed while doing missionary work in Guam in 1672. He was 17 years old then. Through their missionary efforts, many were converted to the Roman Catholic Church through the Sacrament of Baptism.

A plot to murder Calungsod and San Vitores started through false accusations that the missionaries were spreading poison through the ritual of the pouring of water or baptism. They were both caught and murdered after baptizing a mother and her child.

Because of his association with the Chamorro natives of Guam, Calungsod is often portrayed with a crucifix and a palm leaf.

Calungsod, who was described by Vatican as a lay catechist and a martyr, was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2000.

The other six candidates for canonization together with Calungsod are: Blessed Giovanni Battista Piamarta, Italian priest and founder of the Congregation of the Holy Family of Nazareth and of the Congregation of the Humble Sister Servants of the Lord; Blessed Jacques Berthieu, French martyr and priest of the Society of Jesus; Blessed Maria del Carmen, Spanish foundress of the Conceptionist Missionary Sisters of Teaching; Blessed Maria Anna Cope, German religious of the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis in Syracuse; Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, American laywoman; and Blessed Anna Schaffer, German laywoman.

This is the time where we mostly feel the presence of the Lord because it is the spiritual preparation for Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ. It does not matter if one has the stamina to complete the novena or not, what really matters is what is inside the heart. The blessing does not depend on the number of mass attended, but what is important is the disposition of the person who receives the Lord’s blessing.

OAK BEACH, N.Y. -- It's the largest murder investigation ever on New York's Long Island – 10 people slain and strewn along a remote beach highway over 15 years, possibly all victims of the same serial killer. But it's not the first time the New York suburbs have been in the national spotlight for its homicides.

Back in 1974, Ronald DeFeo killed his parents and four siblings in the "Amityville Horror" murders. Colin Ferguson opened fire on a commuter train in 1993, killing six and wounding 19. And this year on Father's Day, four people were executed in a pharmacy robbery in Medford.

Then there are serial killers Joel Rifkin and Robert Schulman. Most of their victims were prostitutes; 17 for Rifkin and five for Schulman, back in the 1990s.

The so-called Gilgo Beach murder mystery, however, is something altogether different.
"The biggest investigation I've ever been involved in," Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer told The Associated Press. "It's garnered the most publicity of any case that I've handled over more than 30 years in the police business."

A website is dedicated to tracking "the Long Island serial killer," a two-hour documentary aired this month on A&E and the deaths have been covered on CBS' "48 Hours." Dormer has even received media attention for his role in the case in his native Ireland.

And it all happened nearly by accident.

On Dec. 11, 2010, a Suffolk police officer and his cadaver dog were in the dunes about 15 miles east of Jones Beach. They were looking for 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert, a missing Jersey City, N.J., prostitute who vanished seven months earlier after meeting a client for sex in Oak Beach, about three miles away.

They happened upon the remains of a woman. That discovery prompted a wider investigation. Two days later, three more sets of remains were found near the first. But none were Gilbert.

Police expanded their search more than 15 miles along the highway, bringing in more K-9 units and putting officers on horseback. Fire departments stretched aerial ladders over a thicket of underbrush and pine trees infested with poison ivy so officers could search from overhead. State police sent officers to assist and Suffolk police academy recruits were called in.

The FBI supplied aerial surveillance photos of the region and other technical assistance.

By April, the search had yielded the remains of 10 victims. Police believe nine were linked to the sex trade. The first four found were strangled elsewhere and dumped, Dormer said; he would not confirm reports they were wrapped in burlap.

In March, the head, hands and forearm of a woman who worked as a prostitute in Washington and New York City were found. The rest of her dismembered body had been located in 2003 in Manorville, about 45 miles to the east. She was identified as 20-year-old Jessica Taylor.

Like Taylor, the first four victims were all in their 20s. They were last seen leaving to meet clients for sex. They were: Melissa Barthelemy, 24, a Buffalo native who lived in the Bronx; Megan Waterman, 22, of Scarborough, Maine, last seen leaving a Long Island hotel; Amber Lynn Costello, 27, originally of Wilmington, N.C., but recently living in North Babylon, N.Y; and Maureen Brainerd-Barnes, 28, of Norwich, Conn. Five other victims have yet to be identified.

Then there is the mother and child.

Police say their remains were found seven miles apart along the parkway. Police released photos of matching jewelry each were wearing, but their IDs remain a mystery.

It is not unheard of for a woman to bring along a child for an online sex encounter, Dormer said.

Another unidentified victim was a man dressed in women's clothing.

The whereabouts of Gilbert, the woman who sparked the investigation, remained a mystery, until a few days ago.

She was last seen running hysterically from a client's home in Oak Beach, a gated community along Ocean Parkway several miles from where the other victims were found. This week, police found her personal effects in marshland near Oak Beach. They continue to look for her remains.

Dormer said officers suspect she drowned in the marshland, and her death is not believed to be connected to the serial killer case. Still, Dormer said, "if it wasn't for Shannan Gilbert's disappearance, we may never have found the remains of the other victims."

Authorities initially suspected that because of the number of victims, the fact that some were dismembered and some not, and the nearly 15 years between the first and last killings, that multiple culprits must be responsible.

But Dormer said authorities now believe one person killed them all. He argued it is not unusual for serial killers to evolve and adjust their methods. He conceded, however, that others disagree, including some in his own department.

But among those who agree is Louis B. Schlesinger, a professor of forensic psychology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and an expert on serial killers.

"The likelihood that more than one person is a serial sexual murderer on Long Island is close to zero," he said. "This is not like in the movies. This type of different methods of operations occurs quite frequently."

Schlesinger explained why victims of one killer – serial killers are nearly always men_ could be left in different conditions. "It could be as simple as he realized it was too much of a hassle," Schlesinger said. "The women killed years ago were dismembered, the recent women were not. He might have figured it was too much trouble."

He also explained the passage of time between killings.

"They guys have a compulsion to kill, but they also can control it," he said. Or "maybe he was in prison for a time."

No suspects have been identified despite a $25,000 reward and more than 1,200 tips, but a man believed to be the killer has made contact with one family.

In the days after Melissa Barthelemy was reported missing in 2009, someone used her cell phone to call her teenage sister in Buffalo at least a half-dozen times. The caller eventually admitted to the girl he was the killer.

New York City police tracked the call to midtown Manhattan and searched near Pennsylvania Station and the Port Authority bus terminal, but the signal went dead. Cellphone records showed a call from Massapequa, on Long Island. Police canvassed the area, asking around at local hotels, but turned up nothing, the official said. There have been no calls in several years.

Melissa Cann of New London, Conn., wants people to remember the victims as more than anonymous prostitutes. Her sister, Maureen Brainerd-Barnes, was found along Ocean Parkway last December. She said her sister was trying to get out of the escort business but had received an eviction notice when she went to meet what turned out to be her last client.

"Everyone knows that these women went down a wrong path in life," Cann said. "But they were still normal human beings with families that loved them."

Cann has formed a bond with the mothers and other relatives of the other women, speaking almost daily and sharing thoughts via Facebook. Several of them are planning a vigil at Oak Beach on Tuesday.

"She was always there for me with emotional support, so I am going to be there and fight for her and for justice for the rest of my life," Cann said of her sister.

But, she added, "It's not all about Maureen. There's a killer out there. He didn't just destroy the lives of 10 people. He destroyed the lives of 10 families."

Many on Long Island have treated the events of the past year with mostly a shrug. Hundreds of thousands trekked to state and town beaches last summer, setting up umbrellas and frolicking in the surf where murder victims had been strewn nearby.

"I feel awful for the victims, of course," said Diane Gentile a legal secretary from Westbury. "But I'm not really worried about a serial killer. There's a better chance of getting killed on a Long Island Rail Road train or walking into a pharmacy. I'm more worried about someone trying to break into my house."

Iraq War Vets at White House Breathe Sigh of Relief

Tanya Bradsher felt a rush of relief each morning when the updates came in letting her know how many U.S. troops were left in Iraq.

Each time the number ticked closer to zero, it meant more of her fellow veterans had made their final trip out of Iraq safely. Her biggest fear was that the remaining U.S. troops would get hit on their way out. She would hold her breath and think, "today is a good day, tomorrow hopefully will be a good day."

Sunday was the day Bradsher, a lieutenant colonel in the Army, had been waiting for. The last of all U.S. troops in Iraq safely crossed the border into Kuwait, bringing the divisive war to a close.

Bradsher, a lieutenant colonel in the Army, witnessed the war's final days from a unique vantage point. The soft-spoken mother of three is one of several Iraq war veterans now working in the White House, helping President Barack Obama bring the war that defined them to a close.

In transitioning from the battlefield to the White House, they have given the war a face and voice in West Wing, serving as a constant reminder that, for a small percentage of Americans, the long, divisive conflict has also been a matter of life and death.

"It's a bit of a gut check on everything you say and do about the policy of the war and the politics of it," said Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser for strategic communication.

The end of the nearly nine-year war marked a promise fulfilled for Obama, who took office pledging to end the conflict. Mindful of the politics of war, some of the veterans who now work for Obama are careful not to draw a direct connection between the president's positions on the Iraq war and their decision to work for his administration.

Still, Steve Miska, Obama's director of Iraq policy, said he had "an overwhelming sense of relief" when the president announced that the war was coming to a close. An Army lieutenant colonel and father of two, Miska did three tours of duty in Iraq, including a 16-month stint in Baghdad that spanned the height of the sectarian violence there.

"My goal was that my generation finish this war so that my son, who is thinking about what he's going to do in college in two years, would not have to complete it with his generation," he said.

Like many veterans of the unpopular war, the military's departure from Iraq has stirred mixed emotions for the veterans in the White House. It's surreal, they say. Bittersweet. A moment of contemplation.

"You go back to your personal recollections of people maybe you know that were lost in battle, to their families, and to the guys who came back very much changed. And I think most people do come back changed in some way," said Matt Flavin, who joined the military after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and served in Iraq from 2005 to 2006, working in Baghdad and Ramadi.

Flavin now serves as director of the White House office on veterans and wounded warrior policy, focusing on how the administration can assist the veterans returning home from Iraq, as well as Afghanistan.

With no military background himself, Obama has often sought the guidance of veterans like Flavin, Miska and Bradsher, who serves as a spokeswoman for the National Security Council. Before delivering a speech last week at North Carolina's Fort Bragg, Obama had the Iraq veterans review the remarks he planned to deliver to service members and their families.

Darienne Page, an Army veteran now working in the White House on veterans and wounded warrior outreach, traveled with the president to Fort Bragg. The war's finality hit home for her on that trip, she said, when she met a young service member who asked her to thank the president for allowing him to spend his first Christmas home with his family in four years.

"To be able to give that to someone and to know that you're responsible for making sure that this guy is home for the holidays, there honestly is no better feeling in the world," said Page, who deployed to Iraq in 2003.

Like the president, the Iraq veterans in the White House do not speak about the war as a mission accomplished. They are candid about the challenges Iraq still faces, yet proud of the work they did there: clearing insurgent strongholds, helping bring down the levels of violence, and restoring basic services for the Iraqi people.

"Iraq is not a perfect place," Flavin said. "Hopefully it will get closer to the ideal, but it's not there yet and maybe it never will be. But based on our tremendous sacrifice, I do think we're leaving the country in a better place."

Each veteran has a vision for Iraq's future: A stable, democratic government. Safe and vibrant cities. A place where they could one day return with their families to visit their Iraqi friends.

But for now, with all U.S. troops having left Iraq, their thoughts are increasingly with the families of the nearly 4,500 Americans killed in war and making sure they know a simple truth.

"Their sacrifices really were worth it," Bradsher said.

Love it or hate it, it's time for Timeline. Facebook's new look, first shown at a Facebook developers conference here in September, rolled out worldwide on Thursday.

The feature offers users a visual personal history that is similar to a digital scrapbook or vanity license plate. Some have even compared its look to Myspace.

MORE: Do you like Facebook's new design?

Facebook's 800 million members can either wait for a notification to pop up on their screen or go to Facebook.com/about/Timelineto get Timeline. Eventually all profiles will switch to the new look. Timeline is also available on touch devices using m.Facebook.com and Facebook for Android.

If you've put embarrassing photos or posts on Facebook, you'll have seven days after switching to Timeline to prune them from your profile before Timeline becomes the default look on your profile page.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has called Timeline a way to share life experiences, but it could also become a carrot for marketers and advertisers to target consumers based on their "likes" and devotion to certain brands as Facebook duels with Google+ and other social networks for advertising dollars, analysts say.

R. "Ray" Wang, CEO at Constellation Research, says Timeline should improve the user experience by adding detail and context to one's profile.

At the same time, Wang cautions, "There's a growing concern among individuals that Facebook is driving individuals to trade their privacy for convenience without understanding the risks. Can individuals turn it off forever if Facebook still owns the data? What do you do to take yourself out of a Timeline? Is this the beginning of digital extortion?"

Facebook users, who have been historically quick to blanch at new features, seem to be divided into two camps: those who love it and those who loathe it. And, as with previous Facebook features, many users are fretting over the security of their personal data.

"It's almost blog-like, allowing more ownership," says Stephanie Howell, 25, social media manager at Z Gallerie, a home-furnishing decor company.

Suzie Linville, 33, of Phoenix is concerned about privacy. "You never know who's going to hack into your page and use that information in a negative manner," she says. "Once Facebook shows me they are on top of security — I don't fully believe they are — I'll go back and check it out."

Republican debate: Gingrich likens himself to Ronald Reagan. Republican front-runner Newt Gingrich likened himself to Ronald Reagan and insisted in a campaign debate Thursday night that he can defeat President Barack Obama in 2012, adding it was laughable for his rivals to challenge his conservative credentials.

Gingrich and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney — who runs second to Gingrich in the polls in Iowa — joined five other White House hopefuls on a debate stage for the last time before Iowa's Jan. 3 caucuses lead off the battle for the Republican presidential nomination.

The big question in the opening moments of a fast-paced two-hour debate went to the heart of a dilemma that could eventually settle the race — do conservative Republican voters pick a candidate who best represents their party's views, or do they simply want the candidate who is best able to defeat the president?

ELECTION 101: Where the GOP candidates stand on social issues

Those voters begin making that choice on Jan. 3, and if experience is any guide, one or more of the presidential hopefuls on the debate stage will not make it out of the state to compete in the New Hampshire primary a week later.

Romney said his experience in private business made him the man to confront Obama in debates in 2012. "And I'll have credibility on the economy when he doesn't," he said.

The Republican primary winner faces Obama, whose favorable ratings have declined sharply, mostly because of his inability to unleash a strong economic recovery. Unemployment remains at a high 8.6 percent.

Gingrich, who seemed an also-ran in the earliest stages of the race, has emerged as a leader heading into the final stretch of the pre-primary campaign. He now leads the Republicans in the polls both in Iowa and nationally.

However, his conservative credentials were immediately challenged: Former Sen. Rick Santorum recalled that as House of Representatives speaker Gingrich had to contend with a "conservative revolution" from the ranks of Republican lawmakers.

Indeed, Gingrich is encumbered with a history of having left the House under a cloud of ethics complaints, and he has had three marriages and admitted marital infidelities.

Romney largely refrained from criticism of Gingrich, despite increasingly barbed attacks in day-to-day campaigning, including a characterization of the former speaker as "zany" for having endorsed mining the moon and lighting highways with mirrors in space.

Google’s celebrating a pretty big app market milestone: 10 billion apps served…er..downloaded. In a blog post, the search giant announced the landmark for the store, which serves its mobile OS-phone-carrying customers, noting that app downloads have been accelerating over the last year or so.

“One billion is a pretty big number by any measurement. However, when it’s describing the speed at which something is growing, it’s simply amazing,” noted Eric Chu, Director, Android Developer Ecosystem in the post. It took Google’s Android Market 20 months to reach its first 1 billion app downloads. The second billion reportedly took five month. Downloads to the 200 million activated Android devices worldwide (a number Google announced at its Google Music event) is now happening at an incredbile 1 billion app installs every 30 days.

Apple celebrated its App Store’s 10 billionth download in January of this year and had a similarly dramatic growth trajectory (it had approximately 3 billion downloads in January of 2010).

While Apple celebrated the milestone by giving one lucky App Store cusotmer a $10,000 iTunes gift card, Google’s turning the milestone into a 10-day-event. Starting today, it’s discounting a wide variety of apps that normally cost anywhere from $0.99 to $6.99 to $0.10 an app. Among the app vendors participating in the program are EA, Gameloft and Glu Mobile.

Glu Mobile, which has been on Android since the early days of the T-Mobile G1 phone with Bonsai Blast and Brain Genius Deluxe, will offer two discounted games: Deer Hunter 3D and Super KO Boxing! 2.

“We’re focusing as much as possible to launch on Android the same day as we do on iOS,” Mike DeLaet, VP of Sales & Marketing, Glu Mobile, told Mashable. DeLaet noted that Android revenues have doubled quarter over quarter, though they still do not surpass those on iOS. “In earnings Android is 30% of revenue, so definitely smaller than iOS but we feel the growth is there in the long term,” explained DeLaet.

The chart below (courtesy of Google) depicts Android Market’s growth.

What do you think? Are these numbers a validation of Android’s growing strength in the market?

An artist in New York has found a series of hidden images in Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece, the "Mona Lisa." Artist Ron Piccirillo says that if you turn the painting sideways, you can see an outline of a lion, an ape, and a buffalo around Mona Lisa's head, and a crocodile and snake coming out of her body. So what's the meaning behind the images? Well, Piccirillo studied da Vinci's journals and says the painting is a representation of jealousy. The telltale journal passage reads, "Give her a leopard's skin, because this creature kills the lion out of envy and by deceit," and that's when he made the connection to the lion's head, hovering above her head. Piccirillo says he's also uncovered hidden meanings in other renaissance paintings by Raphael, as well as in the Sistine Chapel. If you think this interpretation is a stretch, you're not alone. Art historians are skeptical, and most people on social media think Piccirillo is looking too hard and has too much time on his hands.

And next up, the pay site PayPal is drawing flak from the Web for almost being the Grinch who stole Christmas. The popular Etsy spoof blog called Regretsy set up a charity drive to collect donations to buy toys for children in need. In order to collect the donations, Regretsy put a PayPal "donate" button on the site. After receiving a flood of contributions, PayPal suddenly froze the account, forcing Regretsy to return the money. Why? Well, PayPal allows only nonprofit charities to use the donate button, and Regretsy is a for-profit company. Regretsy would need to put a "buy" button on the site instead. And according to two posts (this link is not safe for work) on Regretsy, PayPal also kept the transaction fees. Thousands of outraged Regretsy users commented on those two posts. Then, they quickly migrated over to PayPal's Facebook page. This prompted an apology from PayPal, saying "We can confirm the funds have been released." But even an apology did not stop the online venom. Thousands of people kept criticizing PayPal on their Facebook pages, vowing to close their accounts.

The 10 Most Beautiful Places on Earth

Few things compare to the beauty of nature, and the earth is home to countless enchanting, serene and beautiful places. You surely have your own favorites, whether they are larger-scale locations or as simple as the rock garden you created in your backyard or the tree-lined street you grew up on.

Below are our choices for the top-ten most beautiful on a larger scale (and admittedly we haven't been everywhere!) ... be sure to share YOUR choice for the most beautiful physical place on earth at the end of this article!

1. Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Carved by millions of years of water and wind, the Grand Canyon is an awe-inspiring 5,000-feet deep, 277 miles long and 18 miles wide. Probably the United State's most well-known national park, the Grand Canyon is home to plateaus, hills, gorges, trails and the Colorado River, all set in one of the most impressive backdrops imaginable.

If your jaw doesn't drop when you first witness the Grand Canyon, it likely won't drop anywhere.

2. Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

Located in south Kauai, Hawaii, Poipu Beach is a collection of beaches with golden sand and gentle surf, perfect for swimming, snorkeling and relaxing. Depending on where you are, you can experience water only inches deep (Baby Beach), incredible snorkeling with tropical fish, Hawaiian Monk Seals, and further up the coast Spouting Horn, a spout of seawater forced 50 feet into the air by a lava tube.

3. Ninh Van Bay, Nha Trang, Vietnam

This bay, overlooking the South China Sea, is still relatively untouched and very private. Its beach is accessible only by boat, and the bay is known for its coral reefs, white sand, rock formations, streams and scenic mountains in the background.

4. Arches National Park, Utah

Home to the most natural arches in the world, Arches draws visitors to its stunning balanced rocks, fins and pinnacles, sandstone arches and other rock formations, located in a "high desert," 4,085 to 5,653 feet above sea level.

5. Blue Mountain Peak, Jamaica

The highest point in Jamaica at 7,402 feet, from which you can see much of the island, as well as Cuba and Haiti. The mountains are surrounded by a mist, giving them their blue hue, and are home to vast numbers of butterflies, birds and flowering plants. They're also located in the heart of Jamaica's coffee country, which grows the world-famous Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee.

6. Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA), Tanzania

Covering some 8,300 square kilometers, the NCA is a unique blend of wildlife, natural landscapes and archaeological sites. It has volcanoes and rifts, a crack in the earth's crust that can result in steep cliffs, over 20,000 large animals, and the volcanic Ngorongoro crater, 7,264 feet above sea level.

7. Mount Fuji, Japan

Japan's highest mountain, at 3,776 meters, is a favorite place to watch the sunrise, so it's not uncommon for hikers to climb all through the night and early morning to reach the summit in time. As its near-perfect shape suggests, Mount Fuji is actually a dormant volcano (it last erupted in 1708) that is regarded as a sacred mountain.

8. The Florida Keys and U.S. 1

Traveling down U.S. 1 from Key Largo to Key West, you are surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. The stunning views of the water, with nothing to obstruct the view (the highest point is 18 feet above sea level), lends the surreal feeling of walking on water and the humbling experience of just how big and powerful the oceans are.

9. Napa Valley, California

This California wine country offers breathtaking views of expansive vineyards, rolling hills, and green, lush countryside -- some of the most serene settings in the United States.

10. El Yunque Rainforest, Puerto Rico

Located in eastern Puerto Rico, El Yunque is a mountainous, semi-tropical rainforest with many rivers, waterfalls, pools and streams that provide a sanctuary for wildlife, including the Puerto Rican Parrot, lizards, crabs and tree frogs, and plant life like giant ferns, orchids and bromeliads.

Watch UFC 140 Fight Jones vs. Machida live Stream Free online live here
. Who is your bet?

At UFC 140: Jones vs. Machida, Jon Jones (14-1; 8-1 UFC) will defend his title against challenger and former champion Lyoto Machida (17-2; 9-2 UFC). This Light Heavyweight title fight will be the main event of the evening. According to the USA TODAY / MMA Nation Consensus MMA Rankings, Jones is currently the #1 Light Heavyweight in the world, with The Dragon just outside the top 5 at #6. The PPV card begins Saturday night at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.

One of the big stories of this fight deals with the history of the UFC Light Heavyweight title. Ever since Rampage Jackson KO'd Chuck Liddell, the title has bounced around, from Rampage to Forrest, to Rashad, to Lyoto, to Shogun, to Jones, with no one successfully defending the belt more than once. It's a fierce division, and this kind of revolving door at the top shows just how even it is. But with this fight, one of these two men will distinguish himself from the pack. Either Jones will become only the 4th man in the history of the division to defend the belt more than once (joining the likes of Frank Shamrock, Tito Ortiz, and the Iceman), or Lyoto will become just the 2nd man to regain the crown (alongside Randy Couture). The stats nerd in me gets excited about that.

How do these two stack up?

Jones: 24 years old | 6'4" | 84.5" reach
Machida: 33 years old | 6'1" | 74" reach

What have these two done recently?

Jones: W - Quinton Jackson (Sub) | W - Mauricio Rua (TKO) | W - Ryan Bader (Sub)
Machida: W - Randy Couture (KO) | L - Quinton Jackson (SD) | L - Mauricio Rua (KO)

How did these two get here?

Jones rides a wave of well deserved hype heading into this fight. 2011 has been absolutely huge for the young fighter, who went from highly touted prospect, to champion of the toughest UFC division. If he wins against Lyoto, there can be no question that he is the fighter of the year. His last two fights in particular have been masterpieces. First, he outwrestled and just plain beat up champion Shogun Rua, then he outstruck and outsmarted Rampage. It really feels like we are in the Jones era, as many are wondering if anyone can beat him.

When you say "era", it's hard to forget the ill-fated "Machida era." After Lyoto won the belt from Rashad Evans, Joe Rogan famously declared this the Machida era, stating that Lyoto would be champ for some time. It wasn't to be, as he won a very close and controversial decision over Shogun in his first defense, and was KO'd by Shogun in his second. He followed that up with a loss to Rampage that many (including myself) thought he rightly won. He comes in as the challenger on just a 1 fight win streak. That fight was the Karate Kid style highlight reel KO of Randy Couture - an impressive KO, but not an opponent that at this point should launch you into a title shot. Still, he's a former champion, and a Jones vs. Lyoto fight was inevitable.

Why should you care?

I said it at UFC 135, and I'll say it again here - Jones stands beside Anderson Silva as one of the most exciting and best fighters in the world. The eventual Evans fight may have more drama, but I think this is, from a pure sports standpoint, his best match-up out there right now. It's going to be a technical beauty from both men, and I can't wait.

UPDATE (6:24 pm PT): Well... this just got awkward.

Sources tell ESPN.com's Marc Stein the deal has hit a snag, as a group of NBA owners-- remember, the league owns the Hornets-- has raised strong objections to New Orleans sending Chris Paul to the star-laden Lakers and asked David Stern to intervene to block the trade.

"The deal is off," one source tells ESPN.

Much (much, much, much, much) more to come, I'm sure

--BK

Among the things we learned today on the last day of voluntary workouts in El Segundo is that Steve Blake doesn't care if he starts or not. Good thing, because the Lakers have acquired Chris Paul from the Hornets in exchange for Pau Gasol (likely on his way to Houston) and Lamar Odom.

More information is likely to come through over the next few days, I would think, but in the interim, here are some of the big questions in the immediate aftermath:

1. How does this impact Kobe Bryant?

In the newest edition of The Forum, we discussed if given a choice between Paul and Dwight Howard, which way the Lakers should go. The answer was Howard, not only because he represents an upgrade over Andrew Bynum at center, but the smallest amount of fundamental change for how the Lakers play. They'd still be constructed around a pair of bigs, and Kobe. Now, they have one high-end big, and an elite point guard.

It's great in theory, but it thrusts the Lakers and Bryant into uncharted territory. He's never played with an elite point guard, or even a high-end one since L.A. parted with Nick Van Exel. With Paul, the Lakers have a guy who will, or at least should, dominate the ball in a way Kobe always has. Don't get me wrong - there's plenty of potential in the pairing. It could be cosmically awesome, and help extend Kobe's life as an elite player. For the record, I think it'll work. Kobe respects Paul to the upteenth degree, and understands how important it is for this all to go swimmingly. But in his 16th year, he'll have to change how he operates, which is no easy task.

2. How does it impact Paul?

You don't bring him here unless he's allowed to do what he does, but at the same time, it doesn't make much sense to turn Kobe into an off-ball, weakside player, either. Playing with a guy like Kobe is going to require adjustment on his part, as well.

3. What does this mean for the Howard thing?

The Lakers still have Bynum, and if the plan is still to push for Howard, Drew is obviously the chip. That they can hold on to him in the Paul deal is obviously huge, but will it be enough to entice the Magic? Moving Odom leaves the Lakers short the other half of their presumptive trade for Howard. What can the Lakers add to replace him? Surely other teams will offer something more impressive than Bynum and L.A.'s remaining flotsam and jetsam.

4. How does it impact the present?

The backcourt is absurd, but who do the Lakers line up at forward? Where they once had the most formidable and versatile frontcourt in the NBA, the purple and gold are now frightfully thin up front, pending any additional moves bringing more players back to Los Angeles. The Lakers now have Bynum, no power forward, no backup power forward, and no backup center unless you count Derrick Caracter. Maybe Ron Artest can move to the 4, but he's hardly an ideal solution. And by the way, Bynum can't play the first five games of the season.

More moves have to be coming.

So while the Lakers now have their next superstar, they are, at this very moment, not a better team. With the right moves they will be, but right now, they're not. They have given up a ton of material and left their roster unbalanced. The luxury of two 7-footers (more or less) as skilled as Gasol and Odom is very, very difficult to overstate.

Moreover, they've just added a massive amount of complication to Mike Brown's first season. With virtually no training camp at his disposal, Brown now must install a new system on both ends of the floor with a roster now undergoing massive upheaval.

UPDATE (5:53 pm PT): Via ESPN.com's Larry Coon, if the deal remains as currently constructed, the Lakers would acquire two trade exceptions, one worth $8.9 million (Odom's salary) and another worth about $2.3 million representing the difference in Gasol and Paul's salaries.

This would give the Lakers great flexibility in trying to fortify the roster.

5. What if Bynum stays?

If Bynum really has developed the 15-footer he's been working on for a while, but hasn't really needed because of Pau's presence, fans could have reason to be more excited about the pairing of Bynum and Paul than Paul and Kobe. If CP3 thought Tyson Chandler was the greatest thing since sliced bread, he's going to love Drew, who has more offensive game and the softest hands of any center in the NBA.

An argument can be made that offensively at least, the Lakers are better off with Bynum than Howard in a pairing with Paul (assuming good health for Bynum, of course).

6. So what happens if Paul's knee goes wonky?

Don't even ask.

New planet discovery excites scientists: the discovery of a new planet 600 light years away with roughly the right temperature for plant and animal habitation is causing a buzz in the science community. Though much larger than Earth, scientists haven't ruled out the possibility of life being discovered.

A diagram comparing our own solar system to Kepler-22, a star system containing the first 'habitable zone' planet discovered by NASA's Kepler mission. Kepler-22b, the most Earth-like planet ever discovered is circling a star 600 light years away, a key finding in an ongoing quest to learn if life exists beyond Earth, scientists said on Monday. Kepler-22b joins a list of more than 500 planets found to orbit stars beyond our solar system. It is the smallest and the best positioned to have liquid water on its surface - among the ingredients necessary for life on Earth.A newly discovered planet is eerily similar to Earth and is sitting outside Earth's solar system in what seems to be the ideal place for life, except for one hitch. It is a bit too big.

The planet is smack in the middle of what astronomers call the Goldilocks zone, that hard to find place that is not too hot, not too cold, where water, which is essential for life, does not freeze or boil. And it has a shopping mall-like surface temperature of near 72 degrees, scientists say.

The planet's confirmation was announced Monday by NASA along with other discoveries by its Kepler telescope, which was launched on a planet-hunting mission in 2009.

Space photos of the day: A Blue planet

That is the first planet confirmed in the habitable zone for Kepler, which already had found Earth-like rockyplanets elsewhere. Twice before astronomers have announced a planet found in that zone, but neither has been as promising.

"This is a phenomenal discovery in the course of human history," Geoff Marcy of University of California, Berkeley, one of the pioneers of planet-hunting outside Earth's solar system, said in an email. "This discovery shows that we Homo sapiens are straining our reach into the universe to find planets that remind us of home. We are almost there."

The new planet, named Kepler-22b, has key aspects it shares with Earth. It circles a star that could be the twin of Earth's sun and at just about the same distance. The planet's year of 290 days is even close to Earth's. It probably has water and rock.

The only trouble is the planet's a bit big for life to exist on the surface. The planet is about 2.4 times the size of Earth. It could be more like the gas-and-liquid Neptune with only a rocky core and mostly ocean.

"It's so exciting to imagine the possibilities," said Natalie Batalha, the Kepler deputy science chief.

Floating on that "world completely covered in water" could be like being on an Earth ocean and "it's not beyond the realm of possibility that life could exist in such an ocean," Batalha said in a phone interview.

Kepler cannot find life itself, just where the conditions might be right for it to thrive. And when astronomers look for life elsewhere, they are talking about everything ranging from microbes to advanced intelligence that can be looking back at us.

So far the Kepler telescope has spotted 2,326 candidate planets outside Earth's solar system with 139 of them potentially habitable ones. Even though the confirmed Kepler-22b is a bit big, it is smaller than most of the other candidates. It is closest to Earth in size, temperature and star than either of the two previously announced planets in the zone.

The confirmation of one of two, though, has been disputed. The latest discovery has been confirmed several ways, including by two other telescopes.

This year, a European team of astronomers said they had confirmed another planet in the habitable zone, but that one was hot and barely on the inside edge of the habitable zone.

For Marcy, who is on the Kepler team, the newest planet is a smidgen too large. But, "that smidgen makes all the difference," he said.

Because its size implies that it is closer to Neptune in composition than Earth, "I would bet my telescope that there is no hard, rocky surface to walk on," Marcy said.

Chief Kepler scientist William Borucki said he thinks the planet is somewhere between Earth and gas-and-liquid Neptune, but that it has a lot of rocky material. It is in a size range that scientists do not really know anything about. Measurements next summer may help astronomers have a better idea of its makeup, he said.

The planet is 600 light years away. Each light year is 5.9 trillion miles. It would take a space shuttle about 22 million years to get there.

Kepler spots a planet when it passes in front of its star. NASA requires three of those sightings before it begins to confirm it as a planet. Borucki said the third sighting for 22b happened a year ago, just before the telescope shut down for a while. It took several months to finish the confirmation.

"It's a great gift," Borucki said. "We consider this sort of our Christmas planet."

Revenge is not for the feint of heart. As such, I don’t recommend it for everybody.

I really mean that. The people who are able to pull it off successfully are the ones who strap on a pair of balls and swing away, either not caring in the least what the blowback is, or fully prepared for it.

Boxing people are used to revenge as a tactic, because it is very much a part of doing business. You see, when somebody steals your fighter or a booking, or stiffs you on a purse or a commission, you had BETTER get revenge or else the next guy who comes along to do business with you will invariably try to do the same thing. I’m relatively confident it’s the same in a lot of other businesses, except in boxing it’s….well, it just happens a lot more often.

It doesn’t take terribly long for people in the industry get indoctrinated, As the Hall of Fame matchmaker Teddy Brenner used to say. “The first year you do it for the money; the next year you do it for the revenge.”

Some don’t like to admit it, but we have a tendency to respect people who have demonstrated a capacity to extract revenge, perhaps because we know that they recognized that they have been violated and they would not allow themselves to rest without doing something about it.

As somebody (I forgot who) once said, “Those who turn the other cheek get hit with the other fist.”

That’s a thought Antonio Margarito probably does not want to have for a while, or at least until the swelling goes down.

I like to think I have an advanced degree in revenge, honed through experience, but this was an instance where I had to really stand up and take notice. Many of us can only wish in our lifetime that we could get the kind of payback Miguel Cotto was able to exact on Saturday night, literally from beginning to end.

And I bet some of you respect him a lot more this week than you did last week.

What made it particularly impressive was that it was so deliciously ruthless. Margarito came in with that questionable eye that caused the New York commission to take a second look (pardon the pun) about licensing him. A lesser man may have thought somewhat differently, but Cotto wanted to take that eye right out of the socket. The graphic after the fight (and before Emanuel Steward told us what a nice guy he is) showed that he hit Margarito with 86 punches on that right eye,

Now THAT’S what I call a game plan!

Earlier in the week we talked about how Cotto may have been getting obsessed with the idea that he could not have accumulated all that vicious punishment to the face the first time around without Margarito’s gloves being loaded.

As it turns out, it was just the right dose of obsession for the occasion. Whether or not Margarito was cheating the first time around was somewhat immaterial; as long as COTTO believed it to be true, it was going to serve as just the right kind of motivator.

He closed his opponent’s eye, and got to close some old wounds from the past at the same time.

Did I hear something about a dish best served cold? Try this: Cotto is staring down his man – not just before the fight, but then after the fight as well, when it’s all over, when he’s gotten what he came for. Just to stick the knife in a little more.

He said that he wanted to “taste his victory.” Beautiful!

And then the icing on the cake – he gets to tell the whole world that, no, Margarito hit a little bit more like a featherweight this time around, relative to the last time.

The message – see what happens when you inject fair play into the equation?

It’s almost like a dream. If it wasn’t for the fact that Margarito was able to conjure a huge payday out of this whole thing, it would have been a completely perfect evening. Why could Top Rank’s “winner-take-all” plan have gone into action here, so that Margarito could have walked away from this thing with an eye he couldn’t see out of, a bad reputation that was reaffirmed, a career that is effectively over, and no money on top of that?

The answer to that question is that, well, you can’t have everything.

I’m not being completely tongue-in-cheek here. Think about that girlfriend that broke up with you to go out with another guy. Think about the boss that passed you over for a promotion. Think about the cop who pulled you over and wrote you a ticket for no reason at all.

Then think of what you would do to return the favor, if you had the chance to “taste the victory,” and the balls to really make it happen. That’s what Miguel Cotto got for himself.

He write his dissertation on Saturday night. He got his PhD in revenge. He could even teach a class in it at this point.

Now what?

In the movie “The Sting,” Paul Newman told Robert Redford, “Revenge is for suckers.” I don’t believe that, not for a minute. I believe, in fact, that revenge is the ultimate ANTI-sucker activity.

But I also believe that it is wasted to an extent if it’s an end, rather than a new beginning. Where Cotto goes from here, now that he has conquered this demon, is what is most important.

It will be interesting to see.

How to Link and Get Verified in PayPal Using Smart Money Card. IF you ask how to connect smart money to paypal. Follow the Instruction Below.

NOTE: There have been reports indicating that PayPal rejects Smart Money when being linked as a credit card for verification purposes. For your safety, I suggest that only those who currently have Smart Money card should use the procedure outlined below. I don't recommend applying for Smart Money card for the sole purpose of getting verified in PayPal. Should you need to apply for a credit or debit card, choose Visa Electron instead. Check out my other hub about "The Easiest Way to Get Verified in PayPal - UnionBank's Visa Electron."

For Filipinos, especially those who work online, getting verified in PayPal is one of the most satisfying experiences they can have. At present, PayPal is the only e-commerce business allowing payments and money transfers to be made to the Philippines.

Today, new online workers are so privileged to have been provided with lots of information in this regard. And this one is surely one of them.
For those who have decided to get a Smart Money card, the following information will guide you from making your application to verifying your PayPal account.

Caution for New Applicants

1. Use A New SIM Card

If you will use an old SIM (as I did before), chances are you might be assigned an old Smart Money card number. This is because your card number is generated based on your SIM card number, hence unique.

To get verified in PayPal, Internet Transaction in the Smart Money menu of your cell phone must be unlocked first. However, only Smart Money Card numbers beginning with 5299-67 are allowed to purchase online.

In my case, I was given a card number starting with 5577, making my card, time and effort useless and wasted. This is the reason why this blog is written. So I decided then to look for another card, not Smart Money. My brother's PayPal account was verified using Smart Money.

Interestingly, Smart Money allows each person to have a maximum of two cards bearing the same name.

2. Don’t Forget Your W-PIN

Don’t ever overlook the W-PIN you have chosen to generate your card number. Your ATM/card PIN, by default, is the same as your W-PIN and is automatically updated after setting up your W-PIN.

The processing time for your card of two weeks proves to be long enough to make you forget your W-PIN, so it’s a good idea to write it down in a notebook safe from others.

3. Activate Your Card Immediately

For card activation, call 15177 using your cell phone. After being connected, follow the voice prompts or simply do the following:

“Welcome to Smart 24-hour calling service.”

• To continue in English, press 1.

• For Smart Money products and services, press 2.

• For Smart Money card application or activation, press 1.

• To activate your personalized Smart Money card, press 2.

• Enter your 16-digit card number and press the pound (#) key.

From here on, be patient and provide the information asked by the representative. Follow instructions very carefully.

If the process is successful, the representative should tell you that it takes 15 minutes before your card becomes ready for use.

To be sure, after 15 minutes or so, perform these steps:

• Go to your Smart Money menu

• Choose Activate Card

• Enter your 16-digit card number

• Name your card

• Press OK next

• Enter your W-PIN

• Wait for a short while until your phone “blinks”

• Enter your ATM/card PIN

You will receive a text message from Smart Money indicating your card number. You’re done! Check further by doing the steps below:

• Go to your Smart Money menu

• Choose Balance

You will see there are already two options available: MySmartMoney and the name of your card. Finish!
Verifying PayPal with your Smart Money Card

1. Load your card with at least Php200 via BDO.

This the better option than loading through a Smart Wireless Center, which requires a minimum amount of Php500. Carry out this process:

• Proceed to a local BDO branch.

• Fill-up the orange form named Payment Slip.

• Queue as it should be.

• Submit the slip, money, and your card to the teller.

Confirm whether the money is already in your card in this manner:

• Go to your Smart Money menu

• Choose Balance

• Select MySmartMoney

• Enter your W-PIN

You will receive a text message notifying you of your available balance. You’re done!

2. Have at least Php15 airtime load on your cell phone. (You only have to unlock twice, which charges Php2.5 per unlock. So, you just expend Php5 from your load. Your Smart Money automatically locks itself after a short while.)

n.b. It is not necessary to link your card to your phone as suggested otherwise by Smart Hotline representatives.
Actual Procedure:

1. In PayPal:

• Log into your account

• Click Get Verified (just below your name)

• Enter all required information, including your first name, card type (choose Mastercard), card number, expiry date, and security code (3-digit code found at the back of your card)

2. On your cell phone:

• Go to Smart Money menu

• Choose Internet Txns

• Select Unlock

• Pick MySmartMoney

• Enter your W-PIN

• Press YES

One dollar will be deducted from your Smart Money.

3. On PayPal, click the Continue button immediately and the OK in the next page.

4. A message will be displayed that PayPal cannot verify your card.

5. Repeat Step #2.

6. A four-digit code will be sent to your phone via text message after some time.

7. Enter the four-digit code to your PayPal account.

8. You are now verified!

The two dollars deducted from your Smart Money will be added to your PayPal balance. This refund may take from 24 to 48 hours.

P.S. I suggest you print this guide for convenience and availability. It is my pleasure to know how you feel about this hub.

On the heels of UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel getting fired -- UCLA has a new recruit to get excited about -- Justin Combs, son of hip-hop mogul and entrepreneur Diddy.

The 5'9", 175-pound cornerback hails from Iona Prep in New Rochelle, New York, reports NBC LA. After securing a full Division I scholarship in April 2011, Combs has generated a lot of recruitment buzz. Over the summer, Combs told Scout.com that his coach “had been contacted by Iowa, Iowa State and Kansas State and they were interested. UCLA, Arizona State and also Cincinnati said they were going to get back with me this week, so this is a big week for me."
Looks like UCLA did get back to him, and clearly made an impression. "It was love at first sight," he said. "I'm committed to UCLA -- I was silently committed to UCLA for awhile, but now was the time." reports Scout.com.

Diddy even announced that "This is one of the proudest moments of my life. This is everything a father could want in his son, for him to excel at what he loves to do," reports the Los Angeles Times.

But, if you think the celeb-offspring got the gig from off his dad's name, think again. "His work ethic is tremendous, he is not a great football player because of his dad, it's because of all the work he puts into his game," Darla James, Assistant to Iona Prep Head Coach, told ESPN.

Fans of Justin Combs will have to wait till Summer 2012 to start charging the bleachers at UCLA. Before that, he'll still be playing for the East in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl.

We must admit, we're looking forward to seeing Diddy dressed in Bruin gold and blue.

A million dollars isn't cool. You know what's cool? Being as wealthy as a quarter of the households in the United States combined.

Well, it may be more scary than cool. But it's a reality for Mark Zuckerberg, who could gain $24 billion when Facebook reportedly plans to go public at a valuation of $100 billion in the spring of 2012. The 27 year-old's net worth after the IPO, according to The Wall Street Journal, would be roughly equal to the combined net worth of the poorest 24.7 percent of our nation.

While the thought of one entrepreneur acquiring wealth that's roughly equivalent to the wealth held by 27,909,024 American households may be mind-boggling, it's hardly something new.

For one, analysts have been forecasting that Facebook will go public at a $100 billion valuation since January 2011, though back then, Goldman Sachs and a Russian billionaire invested $500 million in the social network at a $50 billion valuation. In addition, initial public stock offerings, often referred to in startup land as "the holy grail," have been enriching founders for decades. It's one of the big reasons people risk it all to start new businesses.

But Zuckerberg's potential windfall may be the largest amount an individual founder has ever netted from an IPO, a testament to his 'take the money and maintain control' attitude. FactSet, a financial data and software firm, crunched the numbers and here's how Zuckerberg's potential take stacks up to some of the more notable IPOs in the last 10 years:

Add a Button to your VB .NET Forms

Instead of double clicking the Button tool in the toolbox to add the control to the form, we'll explore another way to do it.

With your Form displayed in the Visual Basic Design environment, do the following:

Click on the Button tool in the toolbox with the left hand mouse button, but click only once
Move your mouse to a blank area of your form - the mouse pointer will turn into a cross
Press and hold down the left mouse button
Drag across the form with the button held down
Let go of the mouse button when you're happy with the size
A Button is drawn

You can use the above method to draw most of the controls onto the form - labels, Buttons, textboxes, etc.

The Button control, just like all the other controls we've seen so far, has a list of properties. One of these properties is the Text property. At the moment, your button will say "Button 1". You can change that to anything you like.

Click on the Button to highlight it
Click on Text in the Property Box
Click in the box next to the word "Text"
Delete the word "Button 1"
Type "Add two numbers"
Click back on the Form

Now add a Textbox to your form using one of the methods outlined (either double-click, or draw).

Your Form should now look something like this:
The Font property of the Button has also been changed, here, in exactly the same way as we changed the Font property of the Label and Textbox previously. The Text for the Textbox control has had its default Text (Textbox 1) deleted.

To get our first look at the code window, double click your Button control. The code window will appear, and will look like this:

Notice that we've used the underscore character ( _ ) to spread the code over more than one line. You can do this in your own code, too, if it becomes to long. But you don't have to.

The part to concentrate on for the moment is where your cursor is flashing on and off. Because you double-clicked the Button control, the cursor will be flashing between the lines Private Sub … and End Sub.

Here's the part we're concentrating on:

Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, _
ByVal e As System.EventArgs) _
Handles Button1.Click

End Sub

The part of the code we're interested in is highlighted in red in the code above. Notice, too, that the underscore character ( _ ) has been used to spread the code over more than one line. You can do this in your own code, too, if it becomes to long:

Private
Private means that no other part of the programme can see this code except for our button
Sub
Short for Subroutine. The "Sub" word tells VB that some code follows, and that it needs to be executed
Button1
This is the name of our button. You might think that we've just erased the word "Button1" when we changed the Text property, so why does VB insist that it's still called Button1? We'll, the Name property of the control is the important one. If you change the Name property, VB will change this button name for you
_Click ( )
This is something called an Event. In other words, when the button is clicked, the Click Event will fire, and the code we're going to write will be executed
End Sub
The subroutine ends right here. This signifies the end of our code
